Laughing Beauty - Metal Gear Solid 4

I was planning on completing MGS4 Raiden for Comic Con 2011, but when Konami asked me to judge their cosplay contest, I put that project down to make something I could judge in. I chose to do Laughing Beauty because I already had usable fabric on hand, it would be something comfortable enough to judge in, and it was a costume I was already planning on doing in the future.

This costume was made with wet look spandex and 4-way stretch vinyl. I rush ordered custom stamps to put on all the white text and barcode detailing. For more information on the sewing aspect, check out this blog entry.

I only had about 3 or 4 work days, so there are a number of things that were incomplete or need to be redone. In the future, I plan on making the correct gloves, styling the wig better, and maybe even tinting the dark grey fabric to make the contrast more drastic. Also, while all the white text is there, it isn't as clean as I'd like and I plan on redoing it. For the time crunch, I am happy with it!

Making Bodysuits

I get a number of questions on making bodysuits with stretchy materials, so I thought I'd write up a little guide.

1. Make sure you use a stretch stitch! It allows the seams to stretch without the thread breaking, and it isn't distracting as a top stitch if needed. Here's my favorite stitch to use:

2. Always use 4-way stretch fabric on every part of the suit! If you don't some parts could be too tight once fitted, or wrinkle strangely. Also keep in mind that when sewing a lot of foam pieces on top of a base suit, the suit may become tighter.

3. Invest in a walking foot. It moves the top and bottom pieces of fabric together, which reduces puckering in stretchy fabrics and vinyl. It also is fine to use on non-stretch fabrics.

4. For a pattern, I use a zentai suit that I took apart. If you use this method, use a zentai suit that's a touch larger than needed in case the fabric you use isn't quite as stretchy.

5. If you want to use a mesh overlay, all you have to do is cut the mesh out of the same pattern. Make sure it's 4-way stretch, or you may not be able to put on your suit! If you want, you can sew the edges of the mesh and spandex together before putting the suit together, but I find it's not usually necessary.

6.Before adding anything on top of your base suit, make sure you fit it first.

7. If you want raised/padded portions such as on the Old Snake costume, all you need to do is cut the same size of a thin piece of foam and fabric to cover it with, and just top stitch the fabric around the foam onto the suit. Make sure the fabric is pulled tight! If you do the reverse of this (foam and fabric on the inside of the suit) you can make a really clean looking muscle suit. I use the thinnest green foam found at JoAnn's.

Swimsuit Selvaria

I made this costume for Anime Conji 2011. Swimsuit cosplay isn't my normal thing, but the convention is so small and is just hanging out with friends, so I didn't want to wear anything too complicated or uncomfortable. It worked out perfectly and I was able to comfortably wear it the whole day, except for needing a light jacket at night.

This is obviously nothing spectacular construction-wise. It's essentially a heavily modified bikini with an added bolero, and a holster which only made it into one photo because the knife and gun made it too heavy to walk around in.

Selvaria Bles & Radi Jaeger - Valkyria Chronicles

My big project for 2010 was putting together these two costumes.

For Selvaria, I remade the blouse a few times with different materials to get the correct fit. I had custom embroidered fleur de lis made for the cuffs, which were made from velvet. Additional cuff details were made with trim and gold puffy paint. The pattern on the pants was painstakingly hand-drawn, but they're my pride and joy! The knee pads were made from craft foam. For the lance and shield, my husband created a foam and wood base based on blueprints we both worked on. I took the base pieces and covered them with individually cut pieces of craft foam which were later sealed and painted. It took many, many hours for me to do that!

For Radi Jaeger, I hand seamed the fabric for the coat to match the pattern and used the same velvet seen on Selvaria's cuffs for the front of it. I then crafted the skull, which had a plastic roast chicken as a base--a perfect example of creativity when it comes to cosplay! For the metallic vest, I sewed craft foam together, sealed it, applied stud detailing, and painted it. My husband made his own gauntlet, and we both worked on the thigh armor.

Two and a half weeks before we left for Tokyo Game Show, my husband asked me to make him an Old Snake to wear at TGS. I made the entire Octocamo suit, and my husband made/sourced everything else (except for the Solid Eye, which our gracious friend Jill lent to us to help us save time).

Getting a suit this complicated finished in such a short amount of time was hell, but I'm so happy with the results! It includes padded and seamed detailing, optical sensors (washers), and two types of white text applied with custom stamps. The only thing I'd really like to improve is my husband's old age makeup-- we're always running out of time when I apply it, so I can't make it dark enough/contoured enough. It doesn't help that he's got perfect skin to start with either...

Sweet Raiden - MGS4 Figumate Photos

This costume is near and dear to my heart- it took me to Japan after all! When I first saw the Sweet Snake figurine set, I fell in love with how adorable each of the figurines was, and when my friend Jill said she was doing Sweet Snake, I knew I wanted to do Raiden. Hatsuu later joined us as the adorable Sweet Ocelot. I had a lot of fun cosplaying with them!

I heard about a Kojima signing at Comic Con and a supposed cosplay contest for Metal Gear. I figured the contest was a joke because I'd never heard of anything like that before, and just showed up to the signing hoping to get my costume signed. I never did get it signed, but the contest turned out to be real-- and the surprise prize was a trip to Tokyo Game Show. I later won the Kojima Productions Award with this costume at TGS and was told I increased sales of the figurines by Kojima himself. Not bad at all!

1942 "Bombshell" Cammy White - Street Fighter Photos

This was a simple costume to put together. The only trouble I had with this costume was the gauntlets-- they weren't sealed well and got red paint all over my arms. After I wore them, everyone asked if I had gotten hurt!

Utena Tenjou - Revolutionary Girl Utena

Carla, my Anthy, asked me to do this costume with here at ALA 09. The jacket is a black stretch twill with an attached white cotton 'skirt.' The epaulets were made by combining M&M containers with cookie lids and the appropriate paint. While I'm proud of the quality of this costume, I'm not much of a fan of the series and I'm looking to sell it if anyone is interested! Just make me an offer!

Poison - Final Fight photos

This was essentially just a closet costume. I like the Final Fight/Streets of Rage type of games back in the day, and Poison has such a cute design (and interesting backstory) that it seemed like a good choice. My favorite part about this costume-- the pink wig!

This costume is from 2009. Felicia was a fun character to cosplay as; she's so cheerful! I'm not happy with the ears, and the wig wasn't as smooth as it could be (I'm not good with wigs!). However, I'm happy with it overall. It recently got destroyed at a convention, so I won't be wearing it anymore!

Twilight Lady & Nite Owl II - Watchmen Comic Version

I made these costumes for SDCC 2009, with a time frame of about two weeks. To save on time, I bought and modified a leotard for my costume so that I could focus my efforts on my husband's Nite Owl costume. The cowl, bootcovers, and gloves are made out of a brown suede. He had a lot of kids want photos with him!
